Experience from SFD 2005
The penguin costume was rented from Masquerade, 26 Bali Lane at $80 for 3 days(minimum rental). Their telephone number is 6292 4889. I researched other costume rental places, but they were either ignored me at the counter(No.1 Costume at Aliwal St.), or I was not sure of the quality of the costume.
Walking down Orchard Rd in a penguin costume in our tropical climate. Be prepared! Drink lots of water in the upcoming days, otherwise don't count on anyone taking over wearing the costume after you've dehydrated yourself in it.
Might be a good idea to assign a buddy to the penguin in case someone starts thinking that it'd be real funny to tear Tux's head/feet/flippers off (haha. sorry I can't help it. -Eugene).
Plans for SFD 2006 (16th September 2006)
This year's Software Freedom Day is not going to be as high-profile as the one in 2005. Instead of a grand march down Orchard Road, there are events organised by various groups all over Singapore: Please do update us if you have programmes lined up as well.
10th September 2006: Moonshi is holding a talk on the What and Why of Open Source Software for a XL Results Foundations Momentum Seminar. Target audience are business owners, network marketeers, managing directors and general managers. Contact: moonshi at moonshi dot com
16th September 2006: A seminar will be held at the Singapore Science Centre (YES! THE Science Centre). Harish Pillay will be speaking on "The Importance of Open Source in Education". Both Redhat and LUGS are participating in this event. Additionally there will be demo machines and free CD giveaways. Time: 2.30pm. Venue: Maxwell Auditorium (ground floor of Science Centre). Contact: committee at lugs dot org dot sg
21st September 2006: linuxNUS is holding a Linux configuration/tweaking meetup in the National University of Singapore (NUS). A follow-up from an earlier Linux introductory talk, the aim for this meetup is to get everybody's system in fighting fit condition for the new school semester. This might become a mini install-fest too. Time: 5pm. Venue: SOC1-03-17, NUS School of Computing (To Be Confirmed). Contact: contact at linuxNUS dot org
