Notes for Wiki Editors
Goals
The LUGS Wiki is a place to document, share and collaborate on information relating to the activities of the Linux Users' Group (Singapore) as well as a place for sharing general information on Linux and Open Source in Singapore.
With this in mind, we should keep content relevant within a Singapore context.
Guidelines
Here are some simple guidelines:
Make sure you add content that is well formatted and spelling is checked. Don't add badly formatted content with an intention to fix it up later (otherwise it inevitably won't get done). Add it with good formatting at the first instance. See HelpOnEditing, HelpOnFormatting, SyntaxReference for details on MoinMoin markup.
Make sure you have a wiki homepage eg. MichaelClark which contains at least your obfuscated email address so others can contact you about your changes. Communication is the key to open collaboration.
If you are adding content to an existing page please following the pre-existing formatting on the page (ie. indentation, bullets, sort order, etc). It is fine to change the formatting if it is an improvement but don't add content with inconsistent formatting. ie. if you have a change to the formatting that will improve readability of the page, then update the formatting for all content to the page so it is consistent. If in doubt, send mail to
wikieditors@lugs.org.sg If you make a major contribution feel free to assert ownership over the information by signing your authorship with your WikiName eg. -- MichaelClark (this will be honoured in as much as the other editors agree the content is well formatted and within the goals set out for the Wiki, ie. relevant and related to LUGS or Linux and Open Source in a Singapore context).
There are a number of variable substitutions that may be useful when marking changes or asserting ownership on a page
Email someone if you are making major changes to a page that appears to be owned by someone else or mail the wikieditors mailing list.
Be prepared for open critique of your content. This is the only way we can maintain a high quality of relevant and focused content.
Make sure you add a change comment if possible (for anything other than a minor formatting change). This is so the information on the RecentChanges page is useful.
Wikieditors Mailing List
There is a mailing list setup for regular Wiki Editors:
wikieditors@lugs.org.sg - email address for posting messages to the list.
List information page - you can subscribe and unsubscribe here.
List archives - view archives of Wiki changes and discussion.
Here is some information about the Wikieditors list:
Regular Wiki editors encouraged to subscribe to the list (follow the list information link above).
Infrequent Wiki contributors don't need to subscribe and can view the archives and post to the list as a non member if needed.
The wikieditors mailing list receives instantaneous change notification from MoinMoin with diffs of each change.
Editors comments can be made as replies to these diffs (so we don't need to mess up pages with comments).
Comments on a page not in respect to a change can be sent to the list with the wiki topic name as the subject.
Wiki Editor in Chief
Some semblance of control needs to be maintained over the content to keep it well formatted and relevant (within the above stated goals) while retaining an open access editing policy. With this in mind we need an Editor in Chief that can make decisions regarding content purely so that we can maintain this Wiki as a valuable resource.
The Wiki Editor in Chief (or wikimaster) has these responsibilities:
Controls the ACL for the front page which is the only editing restricted area at present (there also some system pages are restricted).
Takes measures if needed to ensure that content is well formatted and in line with the stated goals, raising for discussion on wikieditors mailing list and removing content if deemed necessary.
The Wiki Editor in Chief is currently MichaelClark until such time as the LugsCommittee delegates someone else.
